WinnersOfScarecrowCompetition 6Bucklesham Scarecrow Festival

We organise Bucklesham's Annual Scarecrow Festival which was brought back by popular demand. Keep your eye on the Up and Coming Events calendar the Bucklesham Bugle and Bugle Bulletins for details of all our projects and events.

Your scarecrows don’t have to be made of straw, there have been some amazing creations in years gone by – just use your imagination. This year, please make sure your scarecrow is in a prominent place in your front garden and ready for judging over the weekend of Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September.

Maps showing the participating scarecrows will be available at the Village Hall Open Day on Saturday 12th September between 11am and 3pm where refreshments will also be available (or If you can’t make that event, maps will also be available all over the whole weekend from Lois at 13 Levington Lane).

Contact lois.mac@btinternet.com to register your Scarecrows by midday Friday 11th September to ensure they are added to the map.

It's only £5 per address to enter your creations no matter how many Scarecrows are in your design and all proceeds go to the Community Council for village projects. Prizes and bragging rights awarded to the winners as usual!

A History of Bucklesham Community Council

The Community Council was formed in 1967 to...

'provide adequate recreational facilities, playing field and playground for the benefit of the community residing in Bucklesham'

...and it has been a constant fund-raising charity for the village ever since. The Parish Council feel the Community Council is a vital asset for the village which needs to be protected.

2Many grants and awards of money are only available to Community Councils and are not open to Parish Councils. In fact, many grants are not available at all to villages without a Community Council. There has been a Community Council in Bucklesham for decades when it was first set up to manage the playing field. The Community Councillors ensure that the constitution is fully adhered to and that any money raised under the auspices of the Community Council is spent solely in the village and on village projects. The Parish Council now manages the Playing Field and all the facilities for the whole village to enjoy, so the Community Council are free to fundraise for any village group that needs their support.

A Community Council AGM is held every year in May and an Annual Report given at the Annual Parish Meeting. In the interests of transparency, all Community Council business is open to public scrutiny.

Unlike the Parish Council, who are the first tier of local government and manage the village, the Community Council fundraise and organise social events in Bucklesham.

We are proud of the D-Day and VE Day events which brought the whole community together in celebration. We organised the Tour Of Britain celebrations, hold Craft Fayres twice yearly, and recently supported the Parish Council’s Play Equipment Project with fundraising events that totaled over £7,500.

We can raise funds to support all village groups and projects, and have helped the Bucklesham Bumps, Babes and Toddler Group, the Bowls Club, the Drama Group, Church Lunch, and Knit and Natter by sourcing grants on their behalf to keep these groups going. If you would like to apply for a grant from the Community Council to support your Bucklesham Club, Society or Group just ask.

2027 will be the 60th Anniversary of Bucklesham Community Council and we are planning a traditional Village Fete in the Summer with old fashioned games and stalls, entertainment, and food and drink on Saturday 17th July 2027 from 12 noon to 4pm. These events take a lot of organising and ‘more hands make light work’ so we would love to have some new faces join the gang.

The Latest Community Council Accounts are audited and sent to the Charity Commission

Our policies ensure we are managing the Community Council correctly:

coffee morning photo3We hold meetings a few times a year to discuss all our ideas for future events and we would love to see you there. Maybe you are interested in helping with publicity and advertising, or catering and baking, or maybe you can offer a hand with heavy lifting, setting up or clearing away, and all those behind the scenes jobs – whatever you can do to help will be greatly appreciated and very much welcomed.

Our regular 'Cuppas and Cakes Cafe' events are very popular and it really helps if we have lots of people baking. So, even if you can just bake a few rock cakes, the odd scone, or something more fancy, please do join in. This is an opportunity to bring the whole community together, for a few hours, to chat, laugh, play a game of cards or a board game, and enjoy each other's company. It can also be an opportunity to meet our Community Police Officer, PC Arlene Ell, if her time and shifts allow.

We offer free cuppas and cakes for all those who attend and we very much look forward to seeing you all there. Keep your eyes open for the dates of our next one so you don't miss out.
